Answer To Question #3
Question #3:
How to effectively plan a practice for a large group of high school athletes (varying levels of fitness)... within a two-hour window?
Answer by Jeremy Boone:
Fitness training in a team setting is always a challenge for soccer coaches. I have found the following guidelines to work with my athletes in this type of setting:
-
Group athletes with similar levels of ability
-
Keep the groups no bigger than four or five. This will help to keep ideal work to rest ratios. If you want them working at a higher intensity put them in a group of three.
-
The worst thing a coach can do is keep athletes standing around. This creates a lot of down time and then not only will fitness levels suffer but athletes minds begin to wonder off in space and the quality of training will dramatically decrease!
-
When possible try and end the session by creating a fun competition that challenges all of the athletes and promotes teamwork. This way the less gifted or fit athlete is encouraged and the better players on the team have the opportunity to work on leadership skills. For a great example of this checkout the ‘Soccer Fit Challenge Event’ that I created a few years ago by visiting our website.
